TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLANS 2009
To provide a safe environment for the event, the cities of Aurora, Denver and Lakewood will have temporary impacts along Colfax Avenue on Sunday, May 17th.
While travel on Colfax Avenue will be restricted, traffic will resume to normal as soon as it is safe for athletes and drivers alike.
TRAFFIC DETAILS:
In General: • Closures could start as early as 3:00am and end as late as 1:00pm.
• The marathon will have full and partial closures of westbound and eastbound Colfax from Aurora to Lakewood.
• Roads that cross Colfax and 17th Avenue could experience significant delays. Colfax at I-25, Federal Boulevard, and I-225 will be the easiest places to cross.
• Drivers are urged to avoid Speer Boulevard and Colfax.
• Crossing intersections along Colfax will be allowed on a very limited basis when safety allows and only at intersections with uniformed police officers.
• Eastbound Colfax will be open from City Park west to Quitman Street and from Colorado Boulevard west to Ursula.
• Westbound Colfax will be closed from Fitzsimons Parkway in Aurora to Quail Street in Lakewood.
• As the Race progresses from Denver’s City Park to Aurora and Lakewood simultaneously, streets will open to normal traffic as rapidly as possible.
Colfax Avenue and 17th Avenue in Aurora:
• The half-marathon course starts at Denver’s City Park, heads east on Colfax Avenue to the Fitzsimons Life Science Center in Aurora and returns to City Park along 17th Avenue.
• Westbound Colfax will close from Potomac to Yosemite at 5:40 a.m.
• 17th Avenue will close from Peoria to Yosemite at 6:10 a.m.
• Peoria will close between Montview and Colfax. Northbound Peoria traffic will be diverted east on Colfax to go north on Fitzsimons Parkway or I-225. Southbound Peoria traffic will need to take Fitzsimons Parkway to continue south or take Montview to go west.
• Ursula Street north of Colfax will be closed.
• Quentin Street north of Colfax will be closed.
• 17th Avenue east of Peoria Street will be closed.
Colfax Avenue in Denver • Westbound Colfax will be closed.
• Colorado Boulevard between Colfax and 23rd Avenue will be closed.
• Southbound off-ramp to I-25 at Colfax will be closed.
• Expect major delays at Speer Boulevard at Colfax.
• The only places to cross Colfax will be at I-25 or Federal Boulevard.
• The last runner will cross westbound Colfax at Speer at approximately 7:30 a.m. and the road will open shortly after.
• The last runner will cross westbound Colfax at Sheridan at approximately 10:00 a.m.
• The last runner will exit the Sloan’s Lake area at approximately 10:30 a.m.
• The last marathon runners will cross eastbound 17th Avenue at Vine at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Downtown Denver • Water St. from I-25 to 15th St. will be local traffic only, traveling northbound only as the runners will be in the southbound lanes (running north).
• 15th St. from Blake St to Platte St. will be local traffic only as the runners will be in the northern most lanes of 15th St.
• 17th St. will be open as the runners will be in the far north lanes only. Some cross traffic and turns will be limited.
• Speer Blvd. at Colfax Ave. in both directions will have very long delays.
• The last marathon runners will pass through downtown at 11:00 a.m.
Colfax Avenue in Lakewood • This year's route in Lakewood will take runners along West Colfax, turning around on Colfax in the westbound lanes just prior to Simms (Simms will remain open north and southbound) and return to the east remaining in the westbound lanes of Colfax before they turn back on West Colfax to return to Denver City Park and the finish line. North and south streets that cross Colfax from Sheridan to Simms will be closed to through traffic from 6-10a.m. North-south streets that cross Colfax will be closed to through traffic between West Sixth and West 20th avenues.
• To move traffic north and south through the area, motorists will be funneled on detour routes to Interstate 70 and Federal Boulevard, using West Sixth, West 20th and West 32nd Avenues.
• Local traffic and marathon spectators will be permitted access.
• Access to Colfax businesses open on May 17 will be allowed from side streets either through limited-access lanes on Colfax marked with cones or through police escorts.
• Access to and from residences and churches adjacent to Colfax will be allowed through the use of side streets.
• Both southbound lanes on Simms Street will remain open as well as one northbound lane.
• The last runner will be off of Colfax at approximately 10:00 a.m.
• Colfax Avenue will be cleaned and swept immediately following the passage of runners.
