Two years ago, on May 4, Keith Ashby underwent a kidney transplant. He’d been born with one kidney, and years of high blood pressure took their toll, causing his remaining kidney to fail.

Kidneys are one organ that a living donor can provide, and lead an active, healthy life afterwards. Most people awaiting a kidney transplant go to family members first. But there’s a 6-point match system, and even blood siblings rarely match.

Keith was on “The List” for only a few months, when his 26 year old step-son, Johnny, offered to see if he was a match. He was. A few weeks later, Keith’s wife waited while her husband and son were wheeled into surgery. Doctors were amazed at how closely the two ma ...

More students in Denver public schools drop out than graduate.

This crisis is something that Colorado Youth for a Change hopes to reverse.

They do it by finding out-of-school youth, encouraging them to return to school, assisting them to find a school that is a good fit, and then helping them transition back to school.  CYC also brings community volunteers into 9th grade classrooms to intervene with potential high school dropouts and creates new alternative schools for returning dropouts.

Colorado Youth for a Change is motivated to do something about it, and that includes recruiting runners -- nearly 20 so far -- and raising money. A lot of money -- $8,605 as of today.

An ...

  • Caffe Sanora, the organic, anti-oxidant rich coffee from one of our favorite Colfax hangouts. Look for them at the Colfax Marathon, and take a trip to their shop at Colfax & Lafayette to try a coffee that's truly good for you.

From Aurora, through Denver, through Lakewood, the Colfax Marathon banners are up! It makes our street look so festive.

Have a picture of them? Send them to liz@coloradocolfaxmarathon.org, and let me know which part of Colfax you're on!

4/21/2008 9:14 PM

One of the reasons the Colorado Colfax Marathon was created by the cities of Aurora, Denver and Lakewood was to shine a positive spotlight on the small businesses on Colfax.

Tomorrow is earth day, and we can't think of a better place to greet the morning than at Hooked on Colfax at Colfax & Steele.

"This artsy coffee shop does all the things that hip patrons love: They exhibit local art, offer free WiFi, let folks linger over their laptops and journals, and showcase area bands and performers. Plus, the owners are widely reputed to be incredibly friendly and neighborhood-focused, which always provokes a good measure of loyalty. As if that's not enough, the locally-roasted coffees are fantastic, and snacks and baked goods are available for nibbling. To top it all off, Hooked on Colfax promotes green living and puts its money where its mouth is – cups and straws are made of biodegradable corn!&am ...

Metro CareRing
is one of our charity partners who are really making a difference in the day to day lives of people in need. They help 30,000 people a year with food and basic necessities. Over half of those are children.

Picture the Pepsi Center full of kids, and you get the idea.

When the Colorado Colfax Marathon debuted in 2006, Metro CareRing found an opportunity to raise funds to help keep its pantry shelves stocked. They put five relay teams together and in a matter of months raised $10,000 for their organization. They did it again in 2007. On May 18th, 2008, they hope to do it again with an anticipated 20 relay teams raising $20,0 ...

They take a two-pronged approach: counseling, and mentoring.

"Dear Constituents,

"Denver, Aurora and Lakewood are joining to support the third annual Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon on Sunday, May 18, 2008.  This is an important event that celebrates the revitalization of America’s longest continuous street — Colfax Avenue. The route this year has been redesigned in response to comments from runners in last year’s race. The course for the full-marathon will start and finish in Denver’s beautiful City Park, and will take walkers, joggers and runners along Colfax through Lakewood, and downtown Denver. The half-marathon will be run east along Colfax to Fitzsimmons and back to City Park. Did you know that Colfax Avenue, or Route 40, was "The Gateway to the Rockies" before I-70 was built? Our very own Route 66.

Ever wonder why all the little old motels with their kitschy neon signs line the street? Those motels used to be swanky places to stay when tourists were travelling west. The last stop before the mountains.

Did you know that Colfax Avenue was home to one of the country's first tram lines?

Did you know that Jack Kerouac's novel, "On the Road," was composed in a little apartment off of Colfax?

Every runner dreads it. You're going along fine, when suddenly all the wind goes out of your sails. Your feet feel like they're encased in cement. It's hitting the wall.

"The bane of long-distance runners and endurance athletes, the dreaded wall can derail the best marathon plans. But it's neither inevitable nor insurmountable."

If you are a regular runner and could manage a 8 or 9 mile run, you're still in contention for the Colfax Marathon.
