More students in Denver public schools drop out than graduate.

This crisis is something that Colorado Youth for a Change hopes to reverse.

They do it by finding out-of-school youth, encouraging them to return to school, assisting them to find a school that is a good fit, and then helping them transition back to school.  CYC also brings community volunteers into 9th grade classrooms to intervene with potential high school dropouts and creates new alternative schools for returning dropouts.

Colorado Youth for a Change is motivated to do something about it, and that includes recruiting runners -- nearly 20 so far -- and raising money. A lot of money -- $8,605 as of today.

It was a sunny day for the Cherry Creek Sneak. Spotted:

  • 30 members of the AIR Foundation, runners from The Denver Rescue Mission and Urban Harvest, getting ready for Colfax.
  • Caffe Sanora, the organic, anti-oxidant rich coffee from one of our favorite Colfax hangouts. Look for them at the Colfax Marathon, and take a trip to their shop at Colfax & Lafayette to try a coffee that's truly good for you.

Metro CareRing
is one of our charity partners who are really making a difference in the day to day lives of people in need. They help 30,000 people a year with food and basic necessities. Over half of those are children.

Picture the Pepsi Center full of kids, and you get the idea.

When the Colorado Colfax Marathon debuted in 2006, Metro CareRing found an opportunity to raise funds to help keep its pantry shelves stocked. They put five relay teams together and in a matter of months raised $10,000 for their organization. They did it again in 2007. On May 18th, 2008, they hope to do it again with an anticipated 20 relay teams raising $20,0 ...

Highlighting another of our Charity Partners, the Prostate Cancer Education Council has added the Colfax Marathon to their PACE Race series.

The PACE Race was launched in 2002 by the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) to increase awareness and early detection of prostate cancer and to educate men and their families on treatment options and other men’s health issues. With events in several cities across the country, the 2008 PACE Race Series has the ability to touch men and women of all walks of life.

“In 2008, approximately 3,210 men in Colorado will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 350 will die from the disease. One in five Colorado men have a lifetime risk of developing the disease, which is higher than th ...

Preventing droupouts with Denver Kids, Inc.
Denver Kids, Inc. works with Denver kids who are at risk for dropping out of school. They try to identify these kids and begin working with them as early as possible.

They take a two-pronged approach: counseling, and mentoring.

Counselors see the kids at school, at home, at lunch, at sporting events to make sure kids stay on track at school. Counselors average eight year relationships with kids.

Freedom Service Dogs
Hey animal lovers, check out our charity partner, Freedom Service Dogs in Englewood.

They rescue dogs from local shelters and train them to be service dogs for people with disabilities. They have 12 dogs in training right now, but not all of them are cut out to be service dogs. Some of them just can't resist the urge to chase the occassional squirrel, and those dogs are available for adoption, too. (So if you've been thinking about adopting a puppy, think about Read More »

DOING SOMETHING LOCALLY ABOUT POLLUTION
There's a lot of talk lately about the pollution in Beijing, and Olympic marathoners saying they won't run in those conditions.

Here in Denver, one of the Colfax Marathon's charity partners is working to do something about Colorado's air.

Runners raising funds for the American Lung Association in Denver will be directly helping ...
