Race faster by knowing your lactate threshold

LACTATE THRESHOLD TRAINING
Are you a weekend warrior that enjoys racing but can't seem to improve your results as much as you'd like? Maybe it's time to re-haul your training regime by precisely figuring out your heart rate zones.

Optimize Endurance Services are the folks to do it. They'll give you a lactate threshold test on your treadmill or at a partner facility. Knowing your LT can assist in setting up training zones to train better and optimize recovery.

"We recommend athletes get tested at the beginning of every season to have a baseline number to train by," says Rob Lockey, owner of Optimize Endurance Services and endurance coach. "Your lactate threshold will move with your fitness."

One your lactate threshold is determined, you'll get a training plan tailored to your numbers.

Optimize Endurance Services is offering all Colfax Marathon runners a 10% discount.

Watch for their bike team on the course -- they'll be leading the elite runners and the wheelchair marathon. They'll also be at Relay Exchange Zone 5, at Sloan’s Lake, 20th Avenue and Stuart.

Visit their website to find out more!
It's Thursday, and that means the Irish Snug Running Club meets for their weekly run.

Every Thursday night, the club meets at the Irish Snug to run a 5K through City Park, with two start times: 6:15 and 6:30.

Afterwards, everyone meets back at the Snug for a spaghetti dinner.
There are many reasons to do your training with a group, and you can read Runner's Edge of the Rockies' Coach David Manthey's take, "Strength in Numbers," in the March issue of Rocky Mountain Sports.
Runner's Edge: Saturday Run

Run with a group
Training with a group is a great way to get ready for a marathon.

If you want to check out one of our official trainers, Runner's Edge, they're doing a group run this Saturday, March 15, from the Stapleton Town Center at 7:30 a.m. Contact Coach David if you want to try out a complimentary run.

You'll get a customized map of the run, Gatorade and water stations every two miles, a pace group to run with, motivation and mental support, and meet a great group of runners.

WHEN:
This Saturday March 15th, 7:30am. Please plan on arriving by 7:15am to warm-up with some light stretching and hear a quick training tip. This week we have a special guest; Dr. Brett Pudom, AKA "The Foot Mechanic" will be out to talk a bit about the biomechanical assessment service that he offers, and how it can be very beneficial in preventing injuries and maximizing your performance.

WHERE:
Central Denver -- Stapleton Town Center. Specifically, we will be meeting in the middle of the Stapleton Town Center on 29th and Roslyn Street. (The closest major intersection is Quebec and 29th.) Look for the group at the fountain and stone park on the corner of 29th & Roslyn Street. Your best bet for close parking is BEHIND Chipotle on the south side of 29th, about 70-100 meters away from the fountain.
MAP

ROUTE:
This is a beautiful, slightly flat (with just a few gradual rollers), out-and-back route through the streets of Park Hill & City Park. We will have Water/Gatorade aid stations along the route every 2 miles as normal, and there are restrooms at the start/finish (Starbucks/Einsteins/King Soopers), and then at multiple points in City Park.

MILEAGE:
Please check your individual training schedules - The max the course will be set to this Saturday is 12 miles. The bonus with this route layout is that members who may want to reduce their long run (in prep for Runnin' of the Green on Sunday), can run the entire route to the 12M turnaround point, but then cross Colorado Blvd. and rejoin the route on the east side. Doing this will give you approx. 9M total for the workout.

Hitting the Wall

Every runner dreads it. You're going along fine, when suddenly all the wind goes out of your sails. Your feet feel like they're encased in cement. It's hitting the wall.

"The bane of long-distance runners and endurance athletes, the dreaded wall can derail the best marathon plans. But it's neither inevitable nor insurmountable."

It's not too late to start training

If you are a regular runner and could manage a 8 or 9 mile run, you're still in contention for the Colfax Marathon.

If you can run 4-5 miles, you're in good shape for the Half Marathon.

And even if you haven't ever run, you can still train for the 5K leg of the Relay Team!

There are two official training groups for Colfax, and we'll be bringing you information about both of them. One is Runner's Edge, and the other is Denver Galloway.

What's the difference?

Jeff Galloway is a marathon runner and trainer and author who basically says you can train better and safer with a running program where you take walk breaks as you build up your mileage.

"When you register for the Galloway program, you get one of Jeff's marathon training books, a training journal, training schedule, Mizuno tech shirt, and a one year subscription to Runner's World," explains Denver Galloway's Mike Costas. "In addition you get to run with some of the best folks in Denver who really care and will help you reach your dream of finishing a marathon."

Runner's Edge, is a group of Denver runners who believe that running might be an individual sport, but it doesn't mean you have to train alone.

" We rotate our group workouts around the metro area," says Runner's Edge Coach David Manthey. "You get a customized training schedule. We have different pace groups, aid stations every 2 miles stocked with water and Gatorade, guest speakers, social events, and T-shirts."

Both groups offer coaching, nutrition, equipment and gear tips.

Check them out to see if one is right for you.
