There is hope for fetal distress syndrome

20% of all pregnancies in the United States will be diagnosed with some type of fetal distress syndrome, which can cause birth defects, premature birth, or loss of the fetus. Gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, two common pregnancy problems, are major causes of fetal distress syndrome.

30-40% of those problems can be eliminated simply by moms remaining healthy during their pregnancies.

Our Charity Partner, Fetal Hope Foundation, tries to help raise awareness among doctors and mothers about how to prevent and treat the problems arising from fetal distress syndrome -- and that includes raising awareness of childhood obesity, the focus of our kids' race, the Marathon Milers One-Mile Fun Run on Saturday, May 17th at 10:00 am.

“Our kids will be the first generation whose life expectancy is lower than their parents,” said Lonnie Sommers, Executive Director of Fetal Hope Foundation. “Childhood obesity is an epidemic. Our kids are starting out disadvantaged.”

Fetal Hope has one of the most diverse medical boards in the country, educating doctors on a wide spectrum of fetal distress syndromes.

They've got several relay teams running the Colfax this year.

Look for them at the Sports & Fitness Expo!
We're the KOOL 105 Cause of the Month!

We're the KOOL 105 Cause of the Month!

Our Charity Partners program is a big success. We've got 41 local charities using the marathon to raise funds and awareness for their causes.

Some of the highlights include:

Colorado Youth for a Change has 25 runners – and they’ve raised more than $11,000 for their work keeping kids in school!

45 men fighting homelessness and addiction will run the Colfax Marathon on May 18 for The Denver Rescue Mission!

The Denver Rescue Mission volunteers will be at the half-marathon Water Station at National Insurance Centers, 10333 E. Colfax

3 high school seniors from Asian Hope will run the full marathon to raise funds for their university educations!

Denver Kids broke the $10,000 fundraising mark yesterday -- and they have 50 runners participating!

Make-a-Wish foundation has volunteers manning the first Relay Exchange Zone, Colfax & Quitman

The American Transplant foundation volunteers will be at the finish line.

ARC Thrift Store volunteers will be at the 18th mile Water Station, 4700 Byron Place

MetroCareRing has raised over $5,000 to help keep their pantry shelves stocked!

For 20 years, KOOL 105 has been your home for Mile High hits. You've let us in to your home and your hearts. You've also supported KOOL and many charitable causes, helping people all over Denver, and for that we thank you! But our work isn't done yet. This web page is a chance for us to increase public awareness of some of our favorite causes and charities around the metro area. So if you have a few extra hours or a few extra dollars and are looking to donate to a reputable charity, you can count on KOOL's Cause of the Month to keep you up to date. Thanks for caring, Denver!

Warren Village hosts NBA legend Bill Russell

Via 9News: "On Tuesday morning, a large breakfast crowd at the Denver Marriot City Center were privy to a morning with NBA legend and Hall of Famer Bill Russell. The breakfast was a benefit to support Warren Village.

"Warren Village exists so that low-income, single parent families achieve sustainable personal and economic self-sufficiency. People who are homeless have not only lost their home, they have also lost their connection to the community. Safe and secure housing, combined with self-help services gives stranded families the opportunity to regroup and become valuable members of society.

"Warren Village has provided shelter to 3,120 families since it was established in 1974 and has been cited as a national model for its combination of housing with on-site family services, Early Childhood Education and school-age programs."

Laughter is the best medicine

More students in Denver public schools drop out than graduate.

This crisis is something that Colorado Youth for a Change hopes to reverse.

They do it by finding out-of-school youth, encouraging them to return to school, assisting them to find a school that is a good fit, and then helping them transition back to school. CYC also brings community volunteers into 9th grade classrooms to intervene with potential high school dropouts and creates new alternative schools for returning dropouts.

Colorado Youth for a Change is motivated to do something about it, and that includes recruiting runners -- nearly 20 so far -- and raising money. A lot of money -- $8,605 as of today.

And they're holding a Wine-Tasting Benefit at the Comedy Works in Larimer Square, featuring funnyman Jake Johanssen. It's Wednesday, May 8, the 5:30 show, and only 48 tickets are left!

Tickets for this special event are $30, and proceeds will go to Colorado Youth for a Change.

So take a well-earned break from your running and give yourself a night of laughter. We promise, you'll feel better in the morning.

It was a sunny day for the Cherry Creek Sneak. Spotted:

30 members of the AIR Foundation, runners from The Denver Rescue Mission and Urban Harvest, getting ready for Colfax.

Caffe Sanora, the organic, anti-oxidant rich coffee from one of our favorite Colfax hangouts. Look for them at the Colfax Marathon, and take a trip to their shop at Colfax & Lafayette to try a coffee that's truly good for you.

Coach David Manthey of Runner's Edge of the Rockies. His Colfax runners had a cold, tough, windy training run yesterday, but they're ready for Colfax, too.

Metro CareRing: One of the Original Charity Partners

Metro CareRing is one of our charity partners who are really making a difference in the day to day lives of people in need. They help 30,000 people a year with food and basic necessities. Over half of those are children.

Picture the Pepsi Center full of kids, and you get the idea.

When the Colorado Colfax Marathon debuted in 2006, Metro CareRing found an opportunity to raise funds to help keep its pantry shelves stocked. They put five relay teams together and in a matter of months raised $10,000 for their organization. They did it again in 2007. On May 18th, 2008, they hope to do it again with an anticipated 20 relay teams raising $20,000.

“Spring is when our reserves from the holidays start to run low in the food pantry,” said Jon Holmer, Metro CareRing’s Executive Director. “We also provide funds for bus tokens, work boots and tools, identification documents and utility assistance, so this is a good opportunity to increase our funding.”

You can help by putting your relay team together, and signing up for an ActiveGiving donation page to raise pledges.

If you can't run this year, they have an urgent need to restock their shelves with basic food items. See what they need here. They'll provide 2,500 people with groceries this month.

Denver Races for Prostate Cancer Education Awareness

Highlighting another of our Charity Partners, the Prostate Cancer Education Council has added the Colfax Marathon to their PACE Race series.

The PACE Race was launched in 2002 by the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) to increase awareness and early detection of prostate cancer and to educate men and their families on treatment options and other men’s health issues. With events in several cities across the country, the 2008 PACE Race Series has the ability to touch men and women of all walks of life.

“In 2008, approximately 3,210 men in Colorado will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 350 will die from the disease. One in five Colorado men have a lifetime risk of developing the disease, which is higher than the national average,” said Wendy Poage, Executive Director, Prostate Cancer Education Council. “As a Denver-headquartered organization, we are thrilled to bring awareness to our own community through the Colfax Marathon about a disease that affects approximately 2 million American men. With our partner Sanofi-Aventis, the PACE Race Series will host a booth during the race where participants and onlookers can collect more information about prostate cancer.”

“A marathon is often about endurance and great accomplishment. But it’s also reflective of a commitment to a healthy lifestyle,” said Creigh Kelley, Operations Manager, Colorado Colfax Marathon. “Together the Prostate Cancer Education Council and the Colorado Colfax Marathon can reach men, and the women in their lives, about the importance of prostate health and early detection.”
Denver Kids

Preventing droupouts with Denver Kids, Inc.

Denver Kids, Inc. works with Denver kids who are at risk for dropping out of school. They try to identify these kids and begin working with them as early as possible.

They take a two-pronged approach: counseling, and mentoring.

Counselors see the kids at school, at home, at lunch, at sporting events to make sure kids stay on track at school. Counselors average eight year relationships with kids.

Mentors see kids a few times a month, and it’s more of a role model relationship, to help kids identify their goals and objectives beyond school.

Denver Kids, Inc. has been serving Denver for 60 years. Five years ago, Denver Kids served 500 kids. Since then, they’ve doubled, adding 100 kids per year.

One of the Denver Kids, Inc. students, Nigel Daniels, a sophomore at Denver School of the Arts, will be running on a relay team with his mentor, Mark Ballard. The two met in 1999, when Nigel was just 6.

Team Denver Kids, Inc's goal is to raise $10,000, and they’re more than halfway there.

Even if you're not running for a charity partner, you can help donate now.

Colorado, Give Back!

Did you catch Idol Gives Back last night?

It was star-studded. Paula, Randy, Simon and Ryan Seacrest all donated their salaries to charity. And over $22 million was raised.

Well, you can give back to Colorado, too.

We have over 40 charity partners using the Colfax Marathon to raise funds for their causes, and you can help.

Register to run the marathon, half-marathon, or get 5 friends to register as a relay team. Then, choose your cause and get creative.

Animal lover? Think about Freedom Service Dogs.

Want to help kids? Think about running for MetroCareRing. They provide food and basic necessities to 30,000 people last year, and more than half were kids. Picture the Pepsi Center full of kids and you get the idea.

Interested in educating our kids? Think about supporting Colorado Youth for a Change. They provide mentors and counseling to high-school and middle-school kids to prevent them from dropping out. They've got more than 15 runners registered already!
