The Air Foundation
|
 |
The AIR (Activity Inspired Rehabilitation) Foundation is a recently founded nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide marathon and distance running training and resources to other nonprofit organizations that work with individuals who are rehabilitating their lives. Through training and racing, these individuals develop habits of discipline, accomplishment, and success. These habits help them to maintain healthy lifestyles and to reconnect and interact with the community in a positive way. Moreover, by touching the lives of one of these individuals, the ripple effect in the lives of their children, their families, and their community is immeasurable.
The AIR Foundation was founded by a father/son team who are great examples of this simple concept. Once struggling with the loss of his son to drugs and the streets, Nick Sterner Sr. took to the streets in 2003 to find his son. Over the next two years, they struggled through drug use, eventually coming out of the streets and into the Denver Rescue Mission’s New Life Program. Nick Sterner Sr., having run several marathons in the past, was asked to recruit and help train other men from the New Life Program to run the Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon in 2007. The inspiration and success of the project resulted in the Sterners’ founding The AIR Foundation, which now provides marathon training programs to the homeless and drug and alcohol rehabilitation communities. | Charity Partner Goal |
Our goal is to use our partnership with the Colfax Marathon to raise 25% of our operating budget for July-December 2008 for our on-going running programs with the Denver Rescue Mission and Urban Peak. We anticipate training 80 new runners in the next year and hope to raise $40,000.00 to provide them with adequate equipment, clothing, shoes, and other items for their training. |
| How to Participate |
Runners may participate in two ways: - Corporate relay teams are invited to join us and become the support team for one of our current clients. Their race-day shirt would include both their corporate logo and the team they are supporting (e.g. XYZ Corporation / Denver Rescue Mission Relay Support Team) - Individual runners are also invited to join us to support The AIR Foundation as well as become involved as a volunteer. |
| Special Features |
Corporate relay teams and individuals will receive race-day shirts. All participants who join The AIR Foundation’s effort are encouraged to join our training groups at one of 8 weekly training sessions. We will help you prepare for your marathon, half-marathon or relay experience. Also, you will meet the individuals you are supporting with your charity partner effort. |
