COLORADO KIDS MARATHON MILERS TRAINING PROGRAM AND FUN RUN

THE “COLORADO KIDS MARATHON MILE”, A ONE-MILE FUN RUN/WALK

This one-mile fun run/walk on Saturday, May 17, 2008 that is open to children in kindergarten through 8th grade who have pre-registered for the event. It is a loop course that will be managed in “waves” by age group. This is not a competitive race. All participating kids are winners! Kids do not need to complete the training program (described below) to participate in the fun run. Parents may run or walk with the younger children, as necessary.
WHERE & WHEN  
FUN RUN COURSE The festive start/finish line will use the same scaffolding and banners that the adults will use for their race the next day, Sunday, May 18th. The one-mile loop course will be run within City Park. The course will be cordoned off for safety; cones will designate the route. A pace leader or leader vehicle will guide the lead runners in each group. Course marshals will be around to course to guide the children and communicate any incidents to medical or management. We will have professional announcers to manage the event and celebrate the winners. From the photos of our prior year events, you can see how much fun the event is for kids.
FINISH LINE FESTIVITIES After receiving their t-shirts and goody bags, finishers will be directed to an area where they will receive their refreshments and may have their photo taken, if parents desire. In the finish line area, booth space will be available for Marathon Milers sponsors and others.
AGE ELIGIBILITY All children in kindergarten through 8th grade.
REGISTRATION $15.00 per child through May 16th; $20.00 on race day at the Sports and Fitness Expo. Each child will receive a race bib with #1 as their runner number. Register early. This year, there is a ceiling on the number of participants. If the ceiling is reached, a message will appear on this web page.

3 WAYS TO REGISTER Children may be registered electronically by visiting the registration section of this web site.

After April 1, children may also be registered by visiting one of these participating stores:

Runners Roost- Lakewood, 437 Wadsworth Boulevard, SWC of Wadsworth and Alameda, Lakewood

Race day registration will be available between 9:00 am and 9:45 am at the Sports and Fitness Expo in City Park, if the cap on runners has not been reached.

BIB PICKUP Bib pickup will begin on April 1st at one of the participating stores listed above. Children who were registered electronically should bring their confirmation notice to a participating store. Bib pickup is also available at the Sports and Fitness Expo at City Park on Friday; visit the Expo section of the web site for time and location details. Bib pickup on Saturday morning is also possible but discouraged due to crowding. Confirmation of registration is always needed for bib pickup.
AWARDS Finishers will receive a t-shirt and goody-bag at the finish line and will be invited to have healthy, post-race refreshments and rejoin their parents, teachers or group.
TRAINING PROGRAM Parents, teachers, and kids can download training books that provide lots of ideas about nutrition, fitness tips and how to train for the “marathon mile.” The training program helps kids build an interest in running and walking, more importantly, helps kids learn that fitness is fun. There are three training books available: For kids who want to complete the official marathon mile training program by running or walking a total of 25.2 miles between now and May 17th, please download the training log and start recording your mileage. If kids complete their training before May 16th, then they are eligible to receive a special incentive gift at participating locations.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTO OPPORTUNITY The race day photographer will set up a photo shoot location near the finish line. Parents who want to capture their child’s accomplishment by purchasing a photo of their child after the race are invited to visit the photo shoot location.
YOUR TRAINING PHOTOS Please send us photos of your child training for the Colorado Kids Marathon Mile. We will post selected photos on this web page. Send them to info@colordocolfaxmarathon.org.
GROUP PARTICIPATION Groups, such as elementary schools, kids in a running program, and friends, are encouraged participate together. This  downloadable Tip Sheet has with some ideas about how to make the program even more fun.
